What happens to the soul after death?
After death, the soul experiences confusion for about 13 to 14 days before stabilizing and transitioning through various realms. It may join the ancestral world and remain dormant until ready for rebirth, influenced by karma and parental choice. The body returns to the elements, while rituals aid the soul's journey.
According to Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's teachings, the soul's journey after death involves several stages and realms. Initially, when the soul leaves the body, it experiences a period of confusion because it is no longer attached to the physical form it was accustomed to. This state of confusion lasts for about 13 to 14 days, during which the soul gradually stabilizes and accepts its new reality.
After this initial phase, the soul transitions through various states and realms. It may join the ancestral world, known as the "pitru loka," and exist in different levels or grades. The soul remains in a peaceful, dormant state, akin to a seed waiting to sprout, until it is ready to take a new birth. This process is influenced by the soul's karma and the love between the parents it chooses for its next life.
The body, on the other hand, dissolves back into the five elements, as described in the Bhagavad Gita. The soul, being eternal, discards the old body like worn-out clothes and prepares to don a new one. Rituals and ceremonies, such as the Antyeshti, are performed to honor this transition and help the soul on its journey. Ultimately, the soul's journey is a continuous cycle of learning and evolution, guided by its karma and spiritual merit.
